Greater durability - Aluminum rims are much more resistant to dynamic impact than steel rims. It is a myth that steel rims are more durable. In the event of an impact, the steel rim will suffer a dent and the immediate loss of air, which can have a dangerous consequence. Aluminum rims will absorb the energy of the impact due to their plastic form.



More efficient cooling of the braking system - the construction of aluminum rims ensures better air flow and thus more effective cooling of the braking systems. As a result, not only their efficiency is improved, but also their service life.

Technical parameters of aluminum rims


Another issue that we would like to raise and present is the basic technical parameters of aluminum rims. Each of them plays a fairly important role in choosing a rim for a car.

1) Diameter - is shown in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). The size of the wheels that can be used in the car is specified by the manufacturer. For example, on Audi A4 B8 cars with 2.0 TDI engine it is possible to mount rims from 16 up to 20. Generally, the larger the capacity and power of the vehicle, the larger the minimum rim size. This is due to the need to use more effective brakes and, consequently, the diameter of the discs and calipers changes.


2) Spacing - a very important parameter is the number and spacing of mounting bolt / nut holes. The spacing is nothing more than the diameter of the circle on which the centers of these mounting holes are located. The diameter of the circle is given in millimeters.

The spacing is a parameter that we must stick to strictly. You can change the spacing by using distances that change the spacing. Such a distance is screwed to the car's hub, and then the rim is mounted with the second set of nuts.

3) ET - Literally submerged, also known as offset (in English) or colloquially weaned. Weaning is usually indicated by the symbol ET. It defines the distance between the rim mounting plane (the plane where the hub and rim meet) and its vertical center of symmetry. With steel and aluminum rims, we can meet with positive and negative values. In the case of a zero ET value, the mounting plane is exactly on the vertical axis of symmetry. To sum up: the smaller the offset, the more the rim is. The service books only provide the parameters of the currently installed rims. However, the manufacturer specifies a range that may be used. It is a mistake to follow the parameters of steel rims when choosing aluminum rims.


4) Width - rims are measured between their protective flanges. The rim width is given in inches. Tires should be selected taking into account the recommendations of the rim, tire and vehicle manufacturer. Nowadays, we have a very wide range of tires, so choosing the right tires should not be a problem. If an authorized service center informs us that we cannot use other tires and alloy wheels than recommended by the manufacturer or acceptable substitutes from the service book, it is usually a lack of knowledge or a marketing procedure.

5) Centering hole - it is nothing else than the diameter of the hole in the rim, which has been adapted to the specific size of the car. However, it often happens that the dimension of the centering hole is larger than the diameter of the hub in the car. Then a centering ring should also be used. The centering rings are made of plastic, because no force acts on them after screwing the rim to the hub of the car. It serves to center the wheel to eliminate vibrations.


6) The load capacity is the allowable load per wheel. In the case of vans and motorhomes, reinforced rims with a strength of over 1000 kg per wheel are dedicated. We also offer such rims.
