5x115 16" – what does this marking on aluminum rims mean?

The notation 16" indicates the rim diameter in inches – this is the dimension of the rim on which the tire is mounted. 5x115, on the other hand, describes the method of mounting the wheel: the rim has five mounting holes evenly distributed over a circle with a diameter of 115 mm (this is the so-called PCD). In practice, this means that the rim fits a hub with five bolts/studs, the axes of which form a circle of 115 mm.

If you want to check the PCD yourself in five-hole rims, you measure the distance from the center of one hole to the outer edge of the hole lying on the other side.

In addition to the diameter and bolt pattern, other geometric parameters of the rim are also important: width (e.g., 6.5J–7J) , ET (offset) , and CB (center bore diameter) . These parameters determine the correct wheel seating on the hub, the absence of interference with the brake calipers, and the correct suspension geometry, so it's always worth confirming them for a specific car model.
