Aluminum or steel rims? What to choose for winter?
Check out our new, updated guide where you will find the answer to which rims to choose for winter.
In Poland, there's still a myth that winter driving is exclusively on steel rims because they're more resistant and durable. Nothing could be further from the truth. Aluminum rims perform just as well, and often better, than steel rims in winter, as they're more resistant to dynamic impacts than steel rims . They're much lighter, which translates into lower fuel consumption and slower wear of suspension components. They also improve braking system cooling, increasing efficiency and performance. The question remains, which rims should you choose?
There are several factors to consider, the first being, of course, your budget. The purchase price of steel rims is only slightly lower, considering the additional accessories needed to install steel rims, such as shorter studs or hubcaps, which can cost up to 400 PLN. The difference in price becomes insignificant. 15-inch steel rims cost between 120 and 170 PLN per piece. 16-inch steel rims cost from 140 to even 250 PLN. 15-inch aluminum rims cost around 250 PLN per piece, while 16-inch aluminum rims start at 300 PLN. Choosing a nice design with straight spokes will make it easier to keep them clean and in good condition. Contrary to popular belief, steel rims corrode faster than aluminum rims .
In short, choosing winter rims is a personal decision for each of us; both types have their pros and cons. Both types are suitable for use in winter conditions, with the exception of polished aluminum and chrome rims. Polished and chrome alloy rims do not handle salt well and are less resistant to chemicals used to clean bituminous surfaces. LadneFelgi.pl recommends rims with a uniform finish, such as SILVER, SI, or SILVER, which are resistant to all conditions.
