The first generation GLS known under the code X164 was produced in the years 2006-2012. Introduced at the same time the premiere of the Audi Q7 and soon after the BMW X5 II, which were one of the main competition for the Mercedes SUV. Although the car was designed with the American market in mind and intended for this market, it is also available in Europe. The relationship that can be seen in relation to the M class can be seen even on the dashboard, which is identical in both cases. In the initial phase, the car was to replace the G class from the 70s, however, this procedure was abandoned, thanks to which both models are sold as a separate offer. Facelift carried out in 2009 brought, among others, the refreshed face of headlights and bumpers. The engine versions for this model range from a 3.0 BlueTEC diesel to a 5.5-liter petrol version with 388 HP on board. The second edition under the code name X166 was presented in 2012 and thus entering production. In addition to the generally refreshed modern style, the car has become lighter and slightly larger than its predecessor, without interfering with the wheelbase. The BlueEFFICIENCY technology used has introduced several amenities, including START / STOP systems and intelligent alternator management, as well as electric power steering. The engine versions were also slightly redesigned, although the choice was reduced, the range remained: from 3.0 liters diesel to 5.5 liters in gasoline. The whole according to the manufacturer's assurances was to become much more efficient. Both generations of GLS are winners of the maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test.
